    Self – Reflection Essay

Systemic racism in American healthcare system Research Paper

    Semi-Weekly Reflection: Week 15

Prompt: What have you learned that has proved most useful to your composition process?

As I worked through the composition process, I realized how much I learned and gained from it. Initially, I found it quite difficult to start reading and truly comprehend what I was engaging with. However, once I began annotating, I was able to understand the material much better. Translating my thoughts into writing was also a significant challenge. Whenever I encountered writer’s block, I found it helpful to revisit the writing by re-reading the articles, which eventually allowed me to move forward.

Peer reviews were another essential part of the process. Although I initially found them somewhat frustrating, the feedback I received gave me a fresh perspective on my work and significantly improved my writing. Overall, a combination of annotating, re-reading, and receiving feedback proved to be the most effective strategies for my composition process.

    Semi-Weekly Reflections: Week 12

Prompt: As you have continued your research work, how has your argument evolved?

As I progressed in my research, I explored various approaches to addressing systemic racism. Initially, my focus was on systemic racism within the social sciences. However, as I delved deeper into other sources, I came across perspectives I had not previously considered. These new insights led me to modify my thesis to better align with the core argument. Ultimately, I shifted my focus to systemic racism in healthcare, which provided new opportunities for analyzing sources.

Semi Weekly Reflections – Week 13

    Prompt:

What is the relationship between your Research essay and your MMT? In your response, be sure to compare the rhetorical situation of each.

My MMT or Multi-Modal Transformation is to be a simplified version of my research paper.  My research paper is for academics, specifically because academics read 8-page papers. Also, the tone in the research paper is a bit complex and serious. The MMT shares some similarities since the information is the same in both formats. Just in the MMT, the audience is young adults, not specifically academics. The information is still informative but, it’s supposed to be easier to consume than the research paper. The way this gets translated is mainly by limiting the amount of information I’m giving, to only the information that’s necessary to understand the MMT and Systematic Racism in general. The tone is still serious, but because of the topic itself, the main thing is that the audience has changed, so the information is mainly simplified for the audience. Besides, MMT had a flashy presentation compared to the paper, where it’s hard to make a difference in the presented information without changing exactly how your word the information. This flashy presentation again is a hope to capture young adults versus academics who don’t mind reading long research papers.

    Week 8 Reflection:

What theory or theories are related to your proposal? How do they relate to your research? OR if absolutely no theories are related to your inquiry: What have we done so far that has been helpful to your writing process? How might you apply this helpful information or tool? What has been confusing or what would you like to spend more time on? If the clarification/additional focus does not occur during class time, how will you acquire the knowledge?

Research, planning, and outlining are most helpful to me in the writing process as they provide a strong foundation for clarity, organization, and argument development. Research helps gather reliable evidence and diverse perspectives to support claims, while planning ensures the essay is focused on its purpose and audience. The outline organizes ideas logically, preventing confusion and enabling smoother transitions between points. By breaking the writing process into manageable steps, these tools save time and reduce stress. Applying this approach, I can use research to deepen my understanding of systemic racism in healthcare, plan by defining the essay’s scope, and create a detailed outline to ensure my arguments flow logically and persuasively, resulting in a coherent and impactful essay.

    Week 11 Reflection:

What’s the intended rhetorical situation of your Research essay? What do you need to do to make this situation a reality?

The intended rhetorical situation in My research essay is to highlight the pervasive issue of systemic racism in the American healthcare system, aiming to inform and persuade readers about its impacts on racial minorities’ health outcomes and access to care. To make this rhetorical situation a reality, I need to make it a well-structured argument with clear evidence, drawing from reliable sources to establish credibility and present both statistical and experiential impacts. It must effectively address counterarguments, such as the role of financial factors versus racism while maintaining an empathetic and academic tone to engage its intended audience of scholars, policymakers, and healthcare advocates.

Semi Weekly Reflections – Week 9 or 10

Prompt: Discuss your research sources. What media are you using? How do these different types of media support your topic/ideas? your writing work?

The sources I am using in my research consist of articles and journals. I use articles and journals Because they go into great detail regarding how systematic racism manifests itself in biased police procedures, unfair sentencing, and police violence, these articles and periodicals provide credence to my writing. I find this useful since it provides data and concrete examples of institutionalized racism in law enforcement. I was somewhat aware of the existence of racism. Nevertheless, after reading these stories, I had a greater understanding of how serious it can be and how many people are unaware of it, which causes law enforcement to keep repeating these crimes because of their authority.

    Week 7 Reflection:

Prompt: Select one learning objective or one component of a learning objective. How have you learned it? How have you developed in this arena so far this semester?

This semester, I concentrated on a strategy that I have been practicing throughout High school: reading and explaining. However, the confusing texts we have recently been reading have forced me to improve my ability to understand the materials I’m reading so I can properly explain them. I found that explanations are suggested for ourselves so that we have a better chance of understanding what we are reading. As we acquire and comprehend material differently from one another, everyone’s explanations will seem the same.
